Sapper and Medic

The sapper has 3 mines but how do you use them? I press E but I don't really see anything happen.

Medics can drop the first aid. Is it only for the medics to use? On a different class I sit on, press E, shoot it, crouch on it, and dead on it but I don't get healed.

Just wondering how to use the weapons/support items on these 2 classes.
